The man vs. man conflicts in the story are very important. They help move the plot along and further the drama and excitement of the overall conflict with winter. There are very many man vs. man conflicts in the story; Stark and Lannister, Eddard and Jaime, Arya and Sansa, Viserys and Kahl Drogo, and many others. They also shape the conflict that begins to arise between those in the north and those in the south. The largest of the aforementioned conflicts is that of Stark and Lannister. Both families control a lot of power and influence. Both are also close to the Iron Throne. The Stark's and Lannister's also have a history of conflicting viewpoints on many things. Their geographical locations also makes them representative of the conflicts between north and south, as well as summer and winter.

Man vs. Self

Lord Eddard Stark faces many tough choices during his reign as Lord, and even tougher decisions as Hand of the King. Lord Eddard’s main fight within him was with always doing the most honorable thing. This book does not fare well for honorable people. For example, after Lord Eddard discovered the truth about the King’s children he had two options. He could either seize the royal children and their mother or he could give them a warning so they could run away. Being an honorable man he gave their mother Cersei fare warning so they could avoid the King’s rage. This backfired on him horribly, instead of running Cersei made her own plot and bought off the guards. So when Eddard accused her, they arrested him and not her. Every character in this book faces choices that are similar to this, they will all have to decide to be honorable or live.

Man vs. Nature

In the book A Game of Thrones nature plays a very important part. Man is always fighting against nature whether it is the cold fierce winter or deadly wild animals. One of the most common and well know quote is “winter is coming” this refers to the extremely low temperatures and harsh times. Winters in this book are the worst things that happen to people, everyone dreads the winters and cherishes the summers. But the seasons are not normal; there can be winters for years at a time. They always say after a long summer comes a long and deadly winter, that is what is currently happening in the book. They are on the early parts of winter and summer has just begun to fade away. There are many deadly animals and creatures that lurk in the forests. Also nature causes a huge change in the story by causing the death of the King. A wild boar attacked the King which caused deadly wounds that he later died from.

Man vs. Society

Man vs. Society is very apparent in this book with Tyrion Lannister the imp who is always looked down upon and John Snow the bastard. The society is very harsh to people and most times don’t get the same treatment. If Tyrion were not part of house Lannister he would most likely have been killed because of his stature. John Snow who is a bastard of Eddard Stark is also constantly fighting the society. People do not like bastards; they are treated without respect even if they are in high classes. Also the King is fighting the society about decisions to go to war and other problems.
